Whether you want to rent or buy, there are some popular websites that can get you started whether your already in the country or not. www.trademe.com and www.realestate.co.nz are pretty trendy at present for anywhere in NZ. You will find houses listed by agencies as well as privately.

Another recent trend but will need an eye of caution are Facebook pages which are usually closed groups. If you search by the city name you want, you can find different ones such as "City Name Buy and Sell" where people may list rental properties etc.

Short term

Now, if your more into travelling or want to bunk somewhere for a night, www.travelbug.co.nz, www.trivago.co.nz, www.holidayhouses.co.nz and www.bookabach.co.nz are widely used websites. The latter two can be especially good for families and larger groups. You can also phone them up to enquire about urgent reservations.
